As a blogger, you have the opportunity to provide a lot of different information to the visitors to your site. Most of the time, you want to keep visitors on your site and minimize references to other websites that they may be interested in. However, many bloggers use a tool known as a blogroll to expand their reach within their niche and recommend related sites to their website visitors. While many blogs use blogrolls, few of them actually use them effectively. Here are a few tips on how to build a better blogroll for your blog.
Find the Right Blogs
When you add another site to your blog roll, you are essentially recommending its content to your visitors. Because of this, you need to spend some time finding quality sites that fit in well with your point of view. If you don’t take your time and choose the right sites to recommend, you’re going to regret it later.
So what sites should you choose for your blogroll? Try to focus on sites that complement your own instead of compete with it. If you are in the same exact niche as another site and you view it as a competitor, you may not want to include it as part of your blogroll. If the site focuses in on a narrow subniche of your niche, then you may be able to recommend it with no problem. For example, if you have a blog about rock climbing and you find a great blog that talks specifically about rock climbing shoes, then you might want to include it as a link in your blogroll. The trick is to find sites to recommend that are not going to take away visitors from your own site. Your visitors might find these other sites useful on occasion, but they are not going to abandon your site and get the same type of content from another blog.
Contact the Other Sites
After you identified some blogs that you would like to add to your blogroll, contact the owners of those sites. Typically, you can find the contact email for most sites somewhere on the side of their pages or at the bottom. Contact the webmaster and complement the quality of his blog. Tell the owner of the blog something specific that you like about his site and possibly even reference individual blog posts. By doing this, you will show the blogger that you have spent some time on his site.
Then offer to trade links as part of your blogrolls. Mention something that your site can offer the other site in return. For example, if you have a large amount of traffic or some avid followers of your blog, this might be useful for the other blogger. At that point, it’s up to the other blogger whether he wants to trade links or not. Sometimes, you’ll get shot down. Other times, the blogger will see the value in trading links with your site and he will move forward.
When it comes to building a blogroll for your site, you need to make sure that you don’t overdo it. It is possible to have too many links on your blog roll. You don’t want to be sending your visitors to too many different places. You want to limit the number of choices that your visitors have when they visit your site. Otherwise, you’re going to end up confusing or frustrating many of them until they eventually leave your site and don’t come back.
If you will take the time to build a strong blog roll, it can make your site seem more reputable and even bring in traffic from new sources.
